Happy Bitcoin Pizza Day!

On May 22nd 2010 , the first ever purchase of a physical item using Bitcoin was made: two pizzas from Papa John’s.

An early Bitcoin user from Florida offered 10,000 bitcoins in a Bitcoin chat to anyone who would get him some pizza, the typical geek food. He probably mined those Bitcoins himself on his normal computer, which was still possible in those early days.

Today, 10,000 bitcoins would be worth around 780 million US dollars, which would make the two pizzas sold on that day the most expensive food in history. Laszlo Hanyecz, the legendary pizza buyer, was later quoted as saying that he had no regrets and had actually made the offer in order to become part of Bitcoin history.

For this reason, 22 May has become known as ‘Bitcoin Pizza Day’, which the global Bitcoin community celebrates by getting together and eating loads of pizza – something of a Christmas for devotees of the Bitcoin cult.

I wrote this song about the legendary pizza-buying experience and deliberately composed it in the style of Italian pizzeria music, with plenty of cheesy elements such as mandolins and wistful vocals. I even sang the chorus in Italian – thanks to Rodolfo Andragnes and some other friends who speak that beautiful language!

The song is now available on all music streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music or Deezer. You can also download it here and use it at your Pizza Day event!

I put the video together using royalty-free footage that I downloaded from the internet. At the end, I filmed myself on my mobile phone singing into the camera.

I wish you all a happy Bitcoin Pizza Day!
